in-class project #1 process

I created this piece around the theme of loneliness and enjoying one’s own company. I chose charcoal because I really enjoy working with it and I wanted to use it to convey the emotional depth of the scene. The sketch itself was challenging, especially because I wanted to draw from a unique angle to make the composition more dynamic. The most difficult part, however, was capturing the shadow because I struggled to find good references for how the light would interact with the chair and the man’s silhouette. On the other hand, I was really happy with how the old lady turned out; she was both enjoyable and rewarding to draw. Overall, I’m pretty happy of how the piece came together, even though some areas, like the shadow and legs of the old lady, were tricky. The complexity of the concept and angle made it a valuable learning experience.
