Job Description and Responsibilities

Fashion designers create original clothing, accessories, and footwear. They sketch designs, choose fabrics and patterns, and oversee the production process of their creations. Designers must stay up to date with trends, understand garment construction, and often collaborate with pattern makers, stylists, and manufacturers. Depending on the role, a designer might focus on high fashion (couture), ready-to-wear lines, or even costume design for film and theater. Many designers also manage branding, marketing, and social media to promote their work.

Required Credentials

Fashion designers typically need a bachelor’s degree to enter the occupation. Employers may prefer to hire creative candidates who have technical knowledge of the production processes for clothing, accessories, or footwear.
